I know we’ve already announced that our twins are a boy and girl but I haven’t written a blog post about it and we also haven’t announced their names yet! So I figured I would write one post for both!
We found out we were pregnant pretty early this time, around 6 weeks. Savva kept telling me that he thinks I am pregnant and I kept telling him no I’m not Savva haha but in the back of my head I felt like I was too. I’m not going to lie, I’m a guilty for taking pregnancy tests way too early and each one I took (3) leading up to finding out we were pregnant was negative. Pregnancy tests usually can’t detect the pregnancy hormone until 10 days after your missed period. Anyway when we found out, I was only 6 weeks pregnant and we were leaving for Greece soon after so I wanted to get into my OBGYN if they were willing to take me that early. They did because we were going to be gone for almost two months.
Well when we received our first ultrasound, the ultrasound tech scared us because she took a this long pause and gave us a look. Then looked at Savva and I and said “Well.. There is two!” Savva and I just looked at each other and laughed, I don’t think we believed it at first!
We could have taken the blood test to detect gender but since they are twins, the only gender duo we would know 100% would be if they were two girls because the blood test can only detect a Y chromosome. So if there were no Y chromosomes detected then we would know that both the babies were girls. If a Y chromosome was detected we wouldn’t know if we were having two boys or a boy and girl. For that reason we just decided to wait until our anatomy scan to find out the gender. A week before our anatomy scan I had my blood sugar test and they weren’t going to give me an ultrasound but last minute the doctor asked if the ultrasound tech could squeeze me in because she couldn’t get a good recording of the second babies heart beat based on how they were positioned. Well I got lucky that day! I was alone at the doctors office so that night I surprised Savva with pink and blue balloons in our room. He was so excited but I can tell he’s a little nervous about having a girl haha!
What are their names?!
We are traditional when it comes to naming our children and in our culture (okay follow along haha) we name our first son after the fathers, father, So that is where Antoni’s name comes from, Savva’s dad. Then you name the second son after the mother’s father. The first daughter in named after the mother’s mother and the second daughter is named after the father’s, mother. Another tradition is to give the father’s name as all of your children’s middle name, which we are doing as well. Which I also love because I love Savva’s name haha.
So our second son’s name will be Evgenios Savvas Damalos – [ Pronounced: Ev-yenios ] after my dad, Eugene. My dad is German and Irish, so his name translated to Greek would be Evgenios. A fun little fact for you, my dad is a junior so his dad was also Eugene and that is who I am named after, Eugenia, and translated into Greek in Evgenia. So I technically have the girl version name of my second son!
Our daughter’s name will be Maritsa Savvina Damalos [ Pronounced: Ma – roll the R – itsa ] after my mom Mary/Maria. My mom’s technical name is Maria but when I was younger, everyone would call her Maritsa. People who were closest to her and who had true genuine love for her would call her that. That name just gives me the happiest memories of my mama growing up and I love it.
We cannot wait to meet our two additions, watching Antoni grow up and form his personality makes me son excited to see how Evgenios & Maritsa will be!
